Chloe represents Waikato at the Collier Cup

Current DLU student Chloe has played every minute of every game this week for Waikato in the inter-provincial Collier Cup girls hockey tournament in Hamilton. The team won pool games against Horowhenua, Wellington, Eastern Southland, and Hawkes Bay, and losing to Canterbury B, but still ended up finishing top of their pool. The match against Hawkes Bay was a top of the table clash in Pool B and vitally important for positioning going into the knock out round starting the next day. They played Pool D runners-up Manawatu in the quarter finals and won 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals and make the top 4! However, they came up against a strong Northland team losing 4-1, and faced Tauranga in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. At the end of regular time, the score was 1-1, so faced golden goal extra time. Unfortunately Tauranga scored to win the match, so the Waikato girls ended up in 4th place out of 24 teams, still a great result. Well done Chloe and the rest of the team.

Wellington Trip 2016

The annual Wellington trip for Year 8 students in the DLU took place from 15 - 19 August when 17 students and 3 parents, along with Mr Metcalfe, flew into the capital city which was experiencing a week of beautiful sunny weather. The group stayed at the centrally located YHA, took in Te Papa and the Gallipoli exhibition, visited our nation's Parliament, experienced the "There and Back Again" tour of WETA Studios, visited the Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, and the "Great War Exhibition" at the Dominion Museum. We also spent three sessions at Capital E where we created two television news shows and worked on 2D animation in the Media Centre. A highlight was our visit to the National War Memorial where we attended the commemoration service for the end of the Vietnam War, and sang our school song "Jerusalem" as part of the ceremony.  In our down time, we went Rock wall climbing, took in a movie, and played our Challenge Games that we created prior to arriving. On the last night, the group went to Genghis Khan's Mongolian Restaurant for a memorable dinner. A great week, with lots of fun and new experiences.

The Mini Production 2016 involved a small group of talented students and staff, who came together and performed a production based on reuniting some fairy tales, you may have thought had parted ways for good. This process stretched over two terms which required hard work and passion to perform. These students dedicated their breaks to refine the small imperfections they hadn't mastered. The outcome was an experience they will definitely remember among their arts and culture journey. This is just one of many amazing productions Maeroa has performed and many to come.
