The Maeroa Olympics 2012

Sarah Ulmer

The school kicked off the Olympics in style with a grand Opening Ceremony where all the classes adopted a home country and marched behing their flag, which included an Olympic flag raising ceremony, an opening speech from guest Olympian Gold Medalist Sarah Ulmer, and the lighting of the flame. Room 5 adopted Spain as their country and selected Annie Oxborrow as their team captain to carry the Spanish flag.
Room 5 has also been busy cooking Spanish Churros and selling them to the school at Sports Break as part of the cultural aspects of the Olympic study. Pictures above show the end result of the cooking with our stall set up to sell our wonderful yummy product.
Our entry into the Wearable Arts parade of nations was very well executed, although not without its difficulties. Quite a number of the designers were absent with illness in the build up, including our model! But a replacement was found, the design was completed, and "Miss Spain" looked sensational in her flamenco costume made from recycleable materials.

The Maeroa Olympics ...... Included Liana and Petria in the 3 legged race, earning a "BRONZE" medal, and Tayla in the sack race who won the "GOLD" medal in the final.
